The good news is that yesterday was Grace's last day of physical therapy. She's been going since Agust to stretch her neck muscles and develop full range ofmotionin her neck. The therapist has also been helping Grace meet her develomental milestones by encouraging her to learn the skills in a 'typical' way rather than an 'atypical' way, which she was doing because her neck wouldn't allow her to. The goal has always been to keep her in PT until she's walking. She is taking SEVERAL steps independently, although not completely walking yet, and her therapist sees no reason to keep her in PT. I am thrilled. I don't have to make the hour drive anymore, or pay for the appointments. What a relief. But what's most important is that Grace is doing so well and coming along wonderfully. She is such a happy child and full of personality. We are just crazy about her. The bad news is that our insurance changed on January 1, and the treatment she's been receiving for her plagiocephaly (flattening of her skull) is now an excluded benefit. She is supposed to get a new helmet in 5 weeks because the one she's been in since December has done just about all it can do. She's had soooo much progress, but still has a ways to go. Ideally she would get a second helmet to wear for another 12 weeks, but if the insurance won't cover it we may have to end her treatment after she outgrows this helmet. We are trying to work something out with the clinic and our insurance company, and also find out if there are continuity of care laws in Texas. We're hoping that we will be able to get it all worked out so she can continue being treated and we can get this all behind us. |
